EFT is short for Emotional Freedom Techniques, which is sometimes referred to as emotional acupuncture…without
the needles, of course! EFT addresses the feelings, especially the negative feelings, about issues in your
life, for example: fears, phobias, sadness, anger or just about anything that interrupts the smooth and peaceful flow of your
life.
EFT is founded upon the belief that negative emotions are the result
of a disruption in the flow of the body’s energy. Let us go back five thousand years or so to India
where the earliest written record of the body’s energy system was documented. This energy is known
as “prana” in Ayurvedic medicine and “Chi” in Asian medicine. The uninterrupted flow of energy keeps the body in balance and harmony allowing for the maintenance
of robust health. It is believed that a disruption in the flow of this energy causes physical and emotional
difficulties.
Our energy flows through meridians or channels throughout
the body. They run in pairs on opposite sides of the body and are all connected to each other deep within the body forming
a continuous loop. Each meridian has its own unique energy for its own specific purpose.
The Western practice of traditional medicine acknowledges the existence
of many body systems including the circulatory system and the nervous and yet, they are slow to acknowledge the existence
of the body’s energy system. This seems a bit strange as so many of our modern diagnostic tests such
as EKG’s, EEG’s and MRI’s have electrical and electromagnetic components, all of which measure energy output
in the body. Is it really such a giant leap to think that our energy
system also has some bearing on our health and well-being?
Physical and
emotional health is about balance and harmony. An out of balance energy system stresses the body. What causes stress? The answer is really quite simple.
Negative emotions,
feelings, thoughts, ideas and beliefs cause stress. Every thought and emotion has a physiologic response.
Have happy thoughts; have a healthy body. Negative thoughts can lead to physical distress.
Here is how that works. A single or repeated traumatic event,
thought, idea, belief or memory causes a disruption in the body’s energy system, This creates a negative emotion such
as the idea or belief that facing a fear may be dangerous or threatening in some way.
So, how does EFT work? EFT helps to neutralize negative emotions
by gently tapping with two fingers on various stress relief points on the face, hands, and upper body to restore the body’s
natural flow of positive energy.
Now, this may sound a little woo-woo
to you, and it even looks a little silly, too. Being a nurse, I was skeptical at first as well.
However, being curious and open to new things, I discovered what a powerful tool EFT is, and I consider it a gift --
a gift that I have personally benefited from and that I now share with my clients.
